Job Description

A Construction Steel Fitter is responsible for fitting, cutting, and installing steel structures, such as beams, columns, and trusses, on construction sites. They interpret construction blueprints and use hand and power tools to measure and cut steel to the required specifications. They also position and align steel components, secure them with bolts and welds, and make adjustments as needed to ensure a proper fit.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and construction drawings to determine steel structure requirements
• Measure and mark cutting lines on steel, using measuring tools and scribe or chalk lines
• Cut, shape, and fit steel components using hand and power tools, such as welding torches, saws, grinders, and drills
• Position and secure steel components in place, using hoists, cranes, and other lifting equipment
• Align and level steel components, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, and other tools
• Bolt or weld steel components together, using hand and power tools
• Check the accuracy of their work and make any necessary adjustments
• Inspect and test welded joints to detect defects and ensure that they meet safety standards
• Follow safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
• Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are clean and in good working condition
• Collaborate with other construction workers, such as welders, ironworkers, and crane operators, to complete projects on time and on budget

Qualification

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Completion of an apprenticeship program or vocational school in construction steel fitting, or several years of on-the-job training
• Strong knowledge of construction blueprints and schematics
• Proficient in the use of hand and power tools
• Experience working with cranes and other lifting equipment
